The Utah Hockey Club is making its highly anticipated debut in the upcoming NHL season, and the excitement is palpable! Since I live in Salt Lake City, I’m excited to finally get back to attending live NHL games. Many friends and locals have never been to an NHL game before, so if you’re planning to attend your first Utah Hockey Club or any other NHL game, you might be wondering what attire to wear to stay warm and show your support.
How cold is it in an NHL arena?
NHL arenas are kept cold to maintain the ice quality for players. The temperature inside can range from 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit (15 to 18 degrees Celsius), but it can feel much colder, especially if you’re sitting close to the ice. The chill can be surprising if you’re not prepared, so the rest of this article should help you dress appropriately.
Layer up for warmth
NHL arenas can be quite chilly, so dressing in layers is key to staying warm and comfortable throughout the game. Here’s what you should consider:
Base layer
Start with a comfortable base layer, like a long-sleeve shirt or thermal top. This will keep you warm without adding too much bulk.
Mid layer:
Add a sweater, hoodie, or fleece. This layer provides additional warmth and can be easily removed if you start to feel too warm. This is the best layer to plan to wear your team’s swag. More on that below.
Outer layer
A lightweight jacket or vest is ideal for the outer layer. Make sure it’s easy to carry or store if you decide to take it off. This is crucial for those winter nights when you walk back/forth from the arena to your car or public transport.
Represent your team with fan gear
Supporting the Utah Hockey Club if you’re from Salt Lake City is a must, BUT if you’re a transplant like me and plan to cheer on another team, wear those visiting colors proudly! What fan attire should you consider wearing?
Team jersey
Wearing a team jersey is the ultimate way to show your support. Whether you choose a home or away jersey, you’ll fit right in with other fans. For an extra touch, consider getting a personalized jersey with your favorite player’s name and number.
Team hat or beanie
A hat or beanie with the your team colors is a great way to keep your head warm and complete your fan look. It’s also a versatile accessory that can be worn year-round.
Scarf
Going for warmth when you’re walking outside in the winter into the arena can be stylish with a team scarf. It not only keeps you warm, but adds a nice touch to your outfit. It’s also multi-purpose as you can wave it in the air when your team scores a goal!
Comfortable footwear
You’ll be on your feet a lot, whether it’s walking to the arena, navigating the concourses, or jumping up to cheer for your team. Wear comfortable shoes like sneakers or casual boots to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the game.
Accessories to consider
Bring these accessories to keep warm, too.
- Gloves: If your hands tend to get cold, pack a pair of gloves. Fingerless gloves are a good option if you want to keep your hands warm while still being able to use your phone, or hold a cold beverage.
- Blanket: Some arenas allow you to bring a small blanket, which can be a way to stay warm, especially if you’re seated near the ice. Be sure to check your arena’s policy, though.
Check the arena’s bag policy
Before heading to the game, check the arena’s bag policy. Venues have specific guidelines about the size and type of bags allowed inside. A small backpack or crossbody bag is usually a good option, but make sure it complies with the rules to avoid any issues at the entrance.
Don’t forget the essentials
Most importantly, don’t forget these at home:
- Tickets: Have your tickets ready, either printed out or on your phone.
- ID and payment methods: Bring your ID and preferred payment methods for snacks/drinks. Most arenas are now cashless, so a credit card is your best bet.
Attending your first NHL game is an exciting experience, and dressing appropriately can ensure you’re comfortable and focused on the game. Layer up for warmth, and proudly wearing your team’s colors while you attend the best live sporting event: NHL hockey.
